In this edition of Tech Matrix, we are delving into the behind-the-scenes of one of NITC’s main technical teams - the Robotics Interest Group (RIG). Dheeraj Reddy, Team Leader at RIG for the year 2020-21 and currently a third-year in CSE, talks to us about their history, the inner workings of the group, projects they’ve done, and everything else you’ve always wanted to know about them.

So firstly, how did RIG begin?

It all started with Robocon in 2012. A group of students from our college were looking to participate in it. They finalised their designs and did whatever else was required to take part, and approached the college for funds. However, the institute was sceptical as they felt that these students would not be able to compete in a competition of such a large scale. That is when the idea of having a dedicated group for robotics came about.

They approached Professor Sudheer from the Mechanical Engineering Department for his guidance, and he assigned them a few projects. In the initial phases, the students didn’t even have a workplace and would work on them from their hostels. Funding was also done from their own pockets. Around May of 2013, they showed their projects to the Director, who was impressed with their work and granted them permission to use the mechatronics lab 24/7 from that day onwards. Since then, we’ve been receiving funding from the institute to participate in Robocon and for all our other projects as well.

What do you think RIG represents? What makes it different from the other technical groups?

RIG was formed for and by a group of students passionate about robotics. The main motto was to facilitate learning and research in the areas of mechatronics and intelligent system automation. Our aim is to acquire knowledge and hands-on experience to provide services to the industry and promote robotics. We also concentrate on socially relevant projects and this is given prime importance. We conduct workshops, exhibitions and talks so that we can share our knowledge amongst our peers, in and outside RIG.

Getting into the actual behind-the-scenes of your club - would you tell us a little bit about your team structure?

There is no particular team structure, we all work together as a single group. To make our work easier and more efficient, we assign ourselves some roles. There is a team leader, project managers, technical coordinators for mechanical and electronics, website and LAN administrator, and finally, a social media manager. Everyone is equally important to the team, and roles are assigned to reduce the workload on each person.

So, how does a day at the lab look like?

We don’t set a particular date or time to work on a project. Whenever one of us is free, we go to the lab and work on them. Each project is assigned to some members and frequent discussions take place within the group. Each project has a few divided tasks and subsections. We keep sub-goals that we need to achieve within a short amount of time, and work to reach these goals. The team works on electronics, mechanical design, simulations, and also tests the strength of the structure. We try to incorporate different computer learning and machine learning techniques in our robots as well. Sudheer sir is always there to assist us. MTech and PhD students, as well as RIG alumni, also help us whenever we need any guidance.

Roughly, how long does it take for a project to be completed?

There is no specific time. We always try to improve our projects as much as possible. Some of them have taken two or three years, and some of them have taken a year; it depends on the scope of the project. For example, we had a project called Finger Reader, where constant improvements kept being added. So the time we take really depends on the project.

So no doubt that RIG is very active throughout the year. Could you tell us about the competitions you usually attend, and the prizes you have won in the past?

As I mentioned, this group was formed because of Robocon. We’ve participated in it in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018 and 2020. Two years back, we attended AUV in Singapore - AUV Varuna was developed at a low cost of around 1-2 lakhs. Our wall climbing robot won FESTO’s productivity challenge in 2015, and we received the best paper by RSI Goa. We have also taken part in the Swasraya Bharat Innovation Competition. The Smart Stick developed by RIG won Aavishkar 2015 and many of our projects even have research papers.

Seems like Robocon was more than just a starting point for RIG! Can you tell us more about it?

Robocon is an Asia-Pacific competition, where we’re assigned tasks that we need to complete in an efficient manner. Robocon is a very important competition for us and we learn a lot from it. Last year, we were one of the better performers in the first round, but unfortunately, we couldn’t carry it to the second round as the college closed. Whenever we visit Robocon, we come to know about better robots and better technology. It is a competition that really brings out the best in us. We haven’t won Robocon till now, but we’ll definitely work towards winning it in the years to come.

You’ve conducted many workshops and exhibitions in the past. What have you learnt from these experiences?

We have learnt a lot from the visitors who come to our exhibitions and workshops, inside as well as outside campus. There is a diverse group of people who attend them, including small children. We had kids of 5-6 years of age visit us during Tathva last year. They seemed to have better ideas than us, and we’ve tried to implement them as well. There were also many esteemed visitors during the Indo Korean summit this year. Professors from other institutes also visit our workplace, check our projects and guide us on how to make them better.

All the technical groups conduct highly successful pre-Tathva workshops for first years, which most of us have attended. How do you conduct them in a smooth manner every year?

The work for them starts during the summer vacation. All the members gather and decide on a project. We understand the project and the concepts needed for it, and utilise this time to learn whatever we are required to teach the first-year students. Each member takes up a topic of his/her interest and makes presentations to show to the first years. We conduct trials to ensure that everything runs smoothly and that our team is equipped to handle any question that comes from the other side. We try to simulate the same kind of environment - of asking and answering questions, so that the members are well prepared for the workshop. All the equipment required for the project is ordered. Other requirements like getting classrooms and microphones are arranged by all of us together. Arranging laptops with apt software downloaded is also a pretty big task that we take up during our first phase.

What have you learnt from being a part of RIG?

I learnt how to work harder, manage my time better and also how to work in a team. A team always works better than an individual. All our members have learnt to approach a problem in a much better and more efficient way, and have equipped ourselves with the skills for doing this. Managing time is very crucial for us, and something that we’ve all learnt after joining this team.

Now there must definitely be a lot of students interested to join the team. What do you look for when you’re recruiting new inductees every year?

We search primarily for those who are interested in robotics, more than those who are technically sound. We do, of course, consider the technical knowledge as well, but the most important skill required is the ability to work in any situation. If academics is your first priority, then your next priority should be RIG.

The pandemic must have sadly hindered your activities. How do you keep yourselves motivated during this time?

We miss being in the lab, but these situations have given us the opportunity to learn new things. We conduct regular talks and meetings. Talks are taken up by us or previous RIG members and MTech students and we learn about various special topics. We hold meetings every now and then, to make sure everyone stays motivated to work. Amongst the team also, each project has a leader who manages the work and distributes it according to each member’s academic schedules, and ensures that none of them are stressed out or overloaded with work, especially now, in this kind of situation.

Apart from technological advancement, RIG also creates projects which aid people. Tell us about those projects.

We have made an electric wheelchair, which usually cost around 1-2 lakhs. Our aim was to bring down the price as much as possible so that it can be made available for people from low-income families. We also designed a Finger Reader, as mentioned previously, which can be used by blind people to read the text by pointing your finger at it. We are also developing a lower limb exoskeleton which will help children suffering from cerebral palsy to walk.

In your opinion, what do you think will be the next big thing in robotics?

I never thought that machine learning and machine vision would be there in robotics - the fact that a robot can be smart enough to outperform a human is amazing. Especially with industry 4.0, machine intelligence is booming right now, making robots autonomous. I hope RIG can also develop such things and provide it to the industry.

Finally, looking back at where you have reached since starting less than ten years ago, where do you see RIG in the next five years?

Our growth curve is definitely very satisfying. We have shown a lot of improvement since the group started. We will keep working on projects and we hope to bring more laurels to ourselves and to the institute. We are very satisfied with our outcomes now and will always thrive to take it to higher levels.
